CHILD AND ADOLESCENT SKILLS TRAINING – A certificate will be awarded
Training delivered in Sheffield from January to March 2015
Training for counsellors and those working professionally with children and adolescents.
Trainer: Amanda Phillips BA Hons, PGCE, UKCP accredited Integrative Psychotherapist and Supervisor, Therapeutic Counsellor for Children and Young People EAITCYP
This exciting new six day course brought to Sheffield for the first time, will be experiential in nature exploring the issues that affect young people aged 8 and upwards, which have an impact on their social and emotional well-being. We will explore how we can work effectively with young people, bringing awareness to our own emotional responses and using those to enhance the relationship. The central theme throughout will be the relationship between the young person and those working with them. We will explore the practical application of various theories, using live examples. We will work as a
supportive group, bringing experiences to share. This will enable you to take this work back into your various settings, and provide a ‘tool box’ of resources, techniques and effective ways of relating to children and young people, in conjunction with interesting theory, so you feel empowered, supported and confident in your important work. The course will be under pinned by the legal, ethical and professional framework.
This course is suitable for those working with children and adolescents, qualified or unqualified counsellors and psychotherapists, and those working within the statutory social care sector, voluntary/charitable sector, schools especially those responsible for pastoral support, teachers etc.
23rd January - Workshop 1
This will be an introduction to the course. It will also give a range of different models providing a framework to work safely within, and explore child development theories.
30th January - Workshop 2
We will explore emotional attachment patterns and their impact on brain development. In addition, how the behaviours we see presented can be the results of insecure attachment.
13th February - Workshop 3
We will explore how to work effectively with challenging behaviours, looking at theories which support successful ways of working, and ones which can be usefully shared with young people to increase their understanding.
27th February - Workshop 4
We will look at the effect self harm and eating disorders have on young people, exploring possible underlying causes rather than focussing on their symptoms.
13th March - Workshop 5
We will explore how to work relationally with young people who are traumatized or suffering loss and strategies to foster resilience.
27th March - Workshop 6
We will explore the impact of bullying on a child’s development. We will look at the importance of boundary setting and the impact of not setting boundaries for young people.

Course delivered by Amanda Phillips BA Hons, PGCE, UKCP accredited Integrative Psychotherapist and Supervisor, Therapeutic Counsellor
for Children and Young People EAITCYP
I have a passion for young people which led me initially into teaching and being a Head of Department for 10 years. As I became more aware of their emotional needs, I became more interested in supporting them to negotiate a healthier path through what at times can feel like turbulent and confusing adolescence.
I have extensive experience over 15 years of working with young people in educational settings (schools, colleges, PRU ), homeless hostels, young offenders, CAHMS and running anger management programmes over a number of years citywide in York. Also, providing intensive support to young people within SASH (Safe and Sound Homes charity - an independent living scheme) and training to council staff employed in the service of young people.
Currently I co-facilitate a children and young people's certificate course at Manchester Institute for Psychotherapy where I also deliver CPD workshops. I have also recently presented workshops at two young peoples' conferences, am a visiting lecturer at Salford University and on a Children and young people's Diploma in Romania.
My private practice with children, families and adults focuses on working relationally within the Integrative theoretical model. I believe my energy, experience and genuine interest in young people enables me to provide a safe, reliable space for them to explore and heal.
Supported by Liz Church - Psychotherapist UKCP registered, supervisor and trainer. I have worked for 36 years in the field of children and young people. Initially as a primary school teacher then working with those young adults excluded from school followed by a few years in FE. The last 15 years I have worked within a children and young people’s charitable organisation in Sheffield, of which the last 5 years I held the responsibility of Managing Director of the charity.
My psychotherapy practice spans in-depth work with children and young people and adults since 1999.

‘Stimulating….’
'Lots of information in an easily accessible structure with plenty of time for trying things out’
‘Informative, experiential approach, friendliness, timely, unthreatening, well presented, well constructed’
